New York, New York
The client for this project had a simple request: to reclaim his coveted view of the Hudson River, which was eclipsed by the construction of two new residential towers to the northwest along the West Side Highway. By building a modest indoor and outdoor space above his roof, views of the river to the southwest would be recaptured over the adjacent buildings. A sense of privacy from the adjacent industrial building to the south was also important, so motorized screens are incorporated into the structure that independently draw both a vertical and horizontal curtain across the outdoor deck, offering variation and flexibility between interior and exterior. This space above the rooftops is intended as an environment for solitary thought, or an intimate gathering of friends. It is at once an escape from – and celebration of – New York City.
